Wild Reads isn't just for kids!

Five Reasons You Should Join the Summer Reading Program

  1. Everyone's doing it! Adults, teens and kids, across the country are participating in the summer reading programs at their local libraries.
  2. Your reading encourages your kids and kids you know to read throughout the summer and makes it easier for them to go back to school in September. Imagine if you took 2 months off from exercising, what kind of shape would you be in when you returned. Reading keeps your mind fit.
  3. Participating is easy to do; read, watch movies, and much more to earn raffle tickets.
  4. Entering the summer reading raffle gives you chances to win great prizes at our end of the summer drawing Finale with Gib Gailius held on the Plymouth Public Library Lawn.
  5. And finally, signing up is easy! Get your first ticket at the Manomet Branch Library and learn more about it.

The Manomet History Book Group

The Manomet History Book Group is for people who enjoy reading history and indulging in a little arm chair generalship. Throughout the spring and winter sessions we read World War I, II and Korean War books but we are going lighter for the summer with New England Maritime History.
We will be reading for discussion:
June 12, 2008 : Sebastian Junger A Perfect Storm
July 10, 2008 : Nathanial Philbrick In the Heart of the Sea: the Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex
August 7, 2008 : Michael Tougias Ten Hours before Dawn

But we are also looking at the following titles to enrich our discussion of historic and contemporary nautical life:

Mark Kulansky, The Last Fish Tale
Herman Melville, Moby Dick
James Johnston, Yankee Fleet: Maritime New England in the Age of Sail by James C. Johnston
Alex Roland, The way of the ship : America's maritime history reenvisioned, 1600-2000
Benjamin Woods Labaree, America and the sea : a maritime history
Eric Jay Dolin Leviathan: The History of Whaling in America
Skip DeBrusk, Codfish, Dogfish, Mermaids and Frank
